The Beautiful Diversity of Roses

Tomorrow is Valentine’s, and wow, it can be brutal, especially if you are single. That feeling of not being chosen can shatter your already fragile sense of value. It can spur questions and emotions about not being enough and what is wrong with you and why can’t you be like the girl who has all the dates or gets all the roses. Let’s talk about all that. Especially roses.

I have heard this flower called a Rock Rose, like it’s a rose wannabe but not really as amazing as a rose. It doesn’t have a long stem, doesn’t work in vases. Probably won’t woo something into romantic mood. It’s just now as WOW as a rose.

Except it really is.

Let me tell you a few things about a Rock Rose.
It grows in bad soil conditions, like around rocks.
It isn’t very big, but it is wonderfully showy with all kinds of fabulous colors.
It doesn’t have thorns.
It can endure all kinds of environmental adversity. It’s determined.
It attracts important environmental friends, like bees and butterflies.
It is essential to the world.
There is nothing “wannabe” about this flower.
It is a lovely flower with its own name and own style, and it is enough as it is.

You may be wondering why I am telling you this about this little flower because really, it all may sound like obvious information.

Sometimes it isn’t so obvious. Sometimes we miss the truth of something right in front of us.

Tomorrow is Valentine’s, and sometimes Valentine’s can be brutal when you are not the bright red rose everyone gushes over, and you may feel like you need to be something that feels more amazing, more noticed, more…that.

But maybe you don’t need to be more that.

Maybe you are exactly what you need to be.

Maybe you are amazing just as you are, and maybe the real issue is not others seeing how beautiful you are, but YOU seeing how beautiful you are.

Maybe YOU are the one who needs to realize how essential you are.

Maybe the Valentine’s love you need is to truly love yourself.

I hope you have a great Valentine’s loving who you are.
